Mallory Knabel, 12
Led by all state pitcher, Jordan Webster, our James River Varsity Softball team expects to turn heads in the upcoming spring sports season. With the graduation of last year’s seniors, current senior captains Jordan Webster, Mallory Knabel, Briahna Thornton, and Madison Pierpoint are working towards taking the team far into the states tournament like the previous four years.
The lady rapids kicked off their season on Thursday with an intense and competitive game against Monacan High School. The amount of students who came out to watch was insurmountable and showed James River’s Rapid Pride. The girls played extremely well but lost a tough game to the Chiefs.
Highlights include freshman Tinsley Porter’s walk off homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning over the center field fence to score three runs, and a double play turned to senior Briahna Thornton in the fifth. Returning from injury, junior Ashlyn Moore and seniors Madison Pierpont and Mallory Knabel performed well in the outfield. Pitcher Jordan Webster pitched an incredible seven innings to sophomore Chloe Rose, and freshmen Noelle Stewart and Catherine Bodsford had great hits to the outfield.
The James River Varsity Softball team will continue to practice for their next game against Manchester as the girls are eager to win states after placing second at regionals and playing into the state quarter finals last year. Come out and support River’s spring sport team at their next home game Friday, March 22 at five o’clock against Atlee High School.
