Swathi Shekharan, 11
The girls volleyball has done exceptionally this season, with many successes and wins. Here’s a Q-an-A with Amelia Walker, a junior on the volleyball team. She talked about the sport in general, why she loves it, and what has contributed to the success of the team.
Swathi Shekharan: What is the team’s record so far this season?
Amelia Walker: 15-4.
Swathi Shekharan: When did the season start?
Amelia Walker: Practice started at the end of August.
Swathi Shekharan: What has your favorite game been so far?
Amelia Walker: I would have to say our senior night. We beat Cosby High School and totally swept them!
Swathi Shekharan: What is your favorite part of the volleyball team?
Amelia Walker: I love how close we are as a team. Our coach, Micah, is awesome and super funny. It’s fun to be a part of a team and represent the school.
Swathi Shekharan: What is practice like?
Amelia Walker: We lift weights about once a week, do training, and have regular volleyball practice 6 times a week.
Swathi Shekharan: What is different about the team this year?
Amelia Walker: We don’t have any new people: it’s the exact same team except for the seniors who graduated. Because there are no new people, we already have our system down very effectively. Everyone knows their roles and we are all very in sync.
Swathi Shekharan: What position do you play and what is it like?
Amelia Walker: I am setter, which is sometimes referred to as the ”quarterback of the team”. I decide what plays to run, makes strategies, and try to throw off the other teams’ blockers. My main goal is to play to my teammates’ strength and set them up for success. I read through the net and decipher what the other team is doing and what their next move will be.
